Introducing Eco5: The Latest Product Making Food Waste Diversion Easy For All

The Eco5 is the food waste dehydrating appliance that has taken Canada by storm, and now, it’s available in Australia, too.

With its 5 litre design, the Eco5 provides a welcome alternative to commercial-sized units, making the process of disposing food waste sustainably accessible to households, cafes and restaurants. This offers the opportunity to educate multiple generations on sustainable practices and divert significant amounts of waste from landfills.

How does it work?

The device reduces food waste by up to a staggering 90%, leaving behind a dry, sterile and nutrient-rich fertiliser which can then be used in gardens to improve soil fertility and fuel plant growth. As a result, food waste is diverted from landfills, preventing the emission of harmful greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. Therefore, the Eco5 transforms food waste into a valuable resource that combats declining soil fertility and actually benefits the environment.

The device runs quietly and is largely odourless. It’s compact size makes it ideal for kitchen benchtops and the sleek design is available in white or grey (coming soon). Additionally, its low energy consumption rating ensures it operates sustainably, too.

Already, Canadian councils have seen impressive results from their trials of the Eco5 in the community. A pilot program in the city of Nelson saw 151 participants trial the Eco5 for three months in their homes, recording their usage of the appliance. The average daily usage was 1.1 buckets (one bucket is equal to one kilogram of food waste) per household. This equated to an astonishing 15 tonnes of food waste being processed across the course of the trial, with 71% of participants solely disposing of the residual fertiliser directly into their gardens.

Participants wanted to put less in the Eco5 - and it’s a good thing.

The results not only saw a significant reduction in the amount of food waste sent to landfill, but a substantial percentage of the participants were even motivated to reduce the amount of food waste they produced in the first place. This demonstrated that the trial extended beyond its primary goal of diverting food waste from landfill and proved to be a thought-provoking program that made residents more aware of their food waste. In accordance with the Food Waste Disposal Hierarchy, avoiding the generation of food waste to begin with is an even more environmentally friendly practice than disposing of it sustainably.

The benefits of the Eco5 didn’t stop there. By transforming the food waste into a largely odourless soil amendment, it was a more appealing practice to residents than composting or regular garbage disposal. Additionally, the lack of odour meant fewer issues with wildlife and pests. Furthermore, with estimates of food waste comprising as much as 40% of a household’s waste on average, by diverting it to the Eco5 residents enjoyed a reduction in the cost of their regular garbage disposal.

The introduction of the Eco5 follows on from enrich360’s involvement in the already highly successful trial of commercial food waste dehydrators in City of Melbourne (COM) high-rise buildings. As the COM trial has already demonstrated the dehydrator’s ability to divert significant amounts of food waste from landfill and improve soil fertility in Melbourne’s community gardens, the team at enrich360 are excited to introduce a unit that makes sustainable food waste disposal accessible to smaller sites. The 5L units are perfect for households and are available for pre-order now.
