Sustainability On The Rise: Melbourne Apartment Buildings Leading The Way To A Circular Economy

The city of Melbourne has taken a big step to reinvent the impact of their food waste on the environment. In what’s being described as an ‘Australian-first’, their latest pilot program has seen six high-rise buildings become the newest members of the Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) collection scheme.

Food waste is one of the most serious threats to the natural world. In fact, according to earth.org, food waste stands as the third-biggest environmental problem globally. Every year, a staggering 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted or lost, making food waste the third-largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

In the city of Melbourne, an astonishing 84% of the population reside in high-rise buildings. With estimates of as much as 40% of food being wasted in households across Australia, the step to introduce the program to high-rise residents was a crucial one.

With so many people residing in high-rise buildings, Lord Mayor Sally Capp was excited to make the significant change.

“We’re proud to be leading the way for FOGO services in Australia by bringing this leading pilot program to new heights for the very first time at this scale” she said.

The trial involves the roll-out of commercial dehydrators to the premises of the apartment buildings. There, residents can drop-off their food waste where it will be reduced by an impressive 85%, leaving behind an organic and incredibly nutrient-rich fertiliser. This fertiliser is then used across the city to improve soil health, support the growth of our public green spaces and critically, avoids any contribution to landfill.

The result of the program is the creation of an economy that is entirely circular. Food that was previously discarded in a wasteful and harmful manner has been re-invented into an incredible environmental asset. Already, 2,368 tonnes of food waste has been diverted from landfill through the city’s principal trial to over 23,000 households and the high-rise program is on track to produce similarly impressive results.

enrich360® is incredibly proud to be helping communities get involved in battling a serious environmental issue and form sustainable habits for everyday life. We are excited to continue working on Melbourne’s high-rise program and look forward to seeing their goal of diverting 90% of their food waste away from landfill by the year 2030 come into fruition.
