The high-rise of sustainability

Apartment living space is often tight, leaving residents little room for extras, and kitchen compost bins are rarely on the essentials list. As more of our population resides in high rise buildings, the questions about how we dispose of food scraps conveniently and sustainably are growing in frequency and volume.
It’s a community activity
With estimates showing that up to four kilograms of food per household per week becomes food waste, a trial of industrial sized dehydrators has begun in six Melbourne high-rise apartment buildings. This easy-to-use service is available for all apartment residents. The dehydrators heat, shred and reduce the size of food scraps by a whopping 85%, before being turned into fertiliser for use back in the community.
Melbourne’s Lord Mayor Sally Capp says:
“Almost 45 per cent of landfill from high-rise apartments is made up of organic waste. We know that getting this number down and finding simple ways to live more sustainably is important to our community.”
The whole family can be involved, from sorting food scraps to emptying them into the dehydrators. Close the lid, walk away and let them do their thing. Managing food waste is necessary, so by changing to sustainable practices that create nutrient-rich organic fertiliser, the result is actually good for our planet.
