The Impact of Food Waste on the Environment

When disposed of unsustainably, food waste carries a hefty environmental impact. Currently, food waste poses an issue globally, from daily household waste to scraps from hospitals, restaurants and farms, one-third of the world’s food is wasted.
How bad is bad?
When food waste is sent to landfill, it decomposes and produces methane, a potent form of greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gases have far-reaching consequences for the planet and its inhabitants. By trapping heat, these emissions accelerate climate change, causing more severe and frequent weather events. Additionally, greenhouse gases contribute to air pollution which can lead to respiratory disease.
According to the Australian government, a staggering eight percent of greenhouse gas emissions can be attributed to food waste.
“If food waste was a country it would be the third largest greenhouse gas emitter, behind the USA and China.”
Concerningly, the impacts don’t stop there; when food is wasted, so too are all the resources that were used to produce it. The production, packaging and transportation of food all carry environmental impacts of their own. For example, it is estimated that as much as 25% of the water used to produce food in the agricultural industry ultimately ends up being wasted.
So, what can we do about it?
Fortunately, it’s not all doom-and-gloom. Through awareness, education and simple changes, we can reinvent food waste, transforming it from an impact into an asset.
At enrich360, we are passionate about protecting the environment by helping businesses divert their food waste from landfill. With our range of enrich360® dehydrators, this waste can instead be converted into nutrient-rich fertiliser and potable water.
